Storytelling and Learning: Where the Hero's Journey meets Gagne's Nine Steps
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
Is there a hybrid model we can create of the Hero’s Journey, Gagne’s Nine Steps, and Merrill’s First Principles? What do classic learning and storytelling models have in common?
In this episode Damala Scales Ghosh and Brenden Carter speak with Peter Allen, an award winning filmmaker and educator with a specific interest in animation, visual effects and early film history. As a lecturer in Film and Television at the VCA, Peter supports the development of some of Australia’s best filmmaking talent, and was our obvious go-to person to speak about the topic.
The podcast discussion starts out considering how we use stories for learning and then goes on to explore the convergence of The Hero’s Journey, Gagne’s Nine Principles of Instruction, and Merrill’s First Principles.
What are these storytelling and learning models all about, what do they have in common, and how we could use these ideas when designing learning experiences? Have a listen and find out – but be prepared for a longish ramble peppered with anecdotes, side topics and a few laughs.
P.S. Our juicy side topics include: Further discussion on the use of podcasts and potential for voice-driven feedback for learners, wearing jackets to do your elearning (ok, we encourage you to give this some google fact checking love and contact us if you know the truth!) … and finally, a fantastic learning hook from Peter.
